Agriculture and mining have been the mainstay of this region. The plains became a vast area for grain production and cattle/sheep grazing. Mining dates back hundreds of years with an abundant source of minerals including gold, silver, copper, tin, lead and iron. The richness and abundance of these combined ‘base economies’ grew to such an extent that Castro Verde became a regional centre of commerce and thus a crossroad of cultures within the Mediterranean area.
